Effective Addiction Treatment for Working San Diego Physicians

Our 10-year Anniversary celebration in October of 2024 drew professionals from across San Diego's healthcare, business, and public safety communities. The event featured proclamations from the County of San Diego, our Congressional Representatives, and local leaders—recognition of the lives changed through our commitment to evidence-based, confidential addiction treatment.

For well over a decade now, Confidential Recovery has been a trusted resource for physicians and other high-performing professionals who require absolute discretion. Our client base has consistently included doctors, surgeons, executives, first responders, and public figures who need effective treatment delivered in a strictly confidential environment.

Under the leadership of CEO Scott H. Silverman—a pioneer in recovery advocacy with over 35 years of experience—and COO Jay Wylie, a 22-year Naval Veteran, our team has developed specialized expertise in addressing the unique challenges physicians face when seeking treatment for substance use disorders. We understand the professional stakes, the psychological barriers, and the career considerations that make recovery particularly complex for medical professionals.

"We offer effective treatment for medical professionals, offered in a respectful, private environment where a recovering attorney can also learn skills to manage stress so that they can thrive in their high stakes career."

Understanding the Challenges that Physicians Face

Physicians face systemic challenges that encourage isolation and self-medication. The pressure to demonstrate unwavering competence, and never show vulnerability makes asking for help feels impossible. While this dedication is admirable in many ways, it becomes a dangerous hindrance when it comes to recognizing and accepting help for a substance use disorder.

Research shows that approximately 10-15% of physicians will develop a substance use disorder during their careers—a rate higher than the general population. Beyond substance misuse, there are other alarming mental health concerns: Physicians experience depression quite often, with some studies showing as 12% of doctors affected. Burnout affects over 40% of practicing physicians. The suicide rate among physicians is nearly twice that of the general population.

Physicians often have easy access to controlled substances and the clinical knowledge to self-medicate, creating unique risks. The fear of losing medical licensure, hospital privileges, and professional reputation keeps many doctors suffering in silence. Some doctors experience a misguided sense of invincibility when prescribing their own medications, and this allows a substance addiction to progress.

Why Physicians Choose Confidential Recovery

Physicians value several things about our approach:

Program Design That Respects Medical Knowledge Our clinical team understands that physicians think differently than the general population. We create a treatment environment that respects your medical knowledge while addressing the professional invincibility mindset and self-medication patterns that are unique to healthcare providers. Our programs are designed specifically for high-functioning professionals who need specialized care, not generic treatment protocols.

Structured Accountability & Monitoring We provide comprehensive long-term monitoring including random drug testing, active case managers who provide consistent oversight, and abstinence-based treatment. This structured approach helps physicians rebuild trust with colleagues, family members, and licensing boards while maintaining the accountability necessary for sustainable recovery.

Complete Confidentiality & Career Protection Our program operates independently—we are not linked to law enforcement, disciplinary organizations, or licensing boards. We create a safe harbor where physicians can focus on recovery without fear of immediate professional consequences when successfully completing our program. We maintain strict confidentiality and provide treatment alongside other successful professionals and executives who value privacy and professionalism.

Flexible, Work-Friendly Scheduling With nights and weekends sessions available, our programming accommodates the demanding schedules of practicing physicians. We also offer telehealth integration into many of our appointments, allowing participants to join remotely. Our approach recognizes that maintaining some practice responsibilities during treatment may be essential for your career and financial stability.

Professional & Legal Support Our team provides guidance in meeting requirements set by medical licensing boards and disciplinary bodies. We offer advocacy with third parties when needed and case management services specific to physician needs. We understand the complexities of Medical Board proceedings, hospital credentialing, and professional liability concerns.

Integration with Medical Professional Recovery Community We facilitate integration with 12-step programs including Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Caduceus Meetings specifically designed for medical professionals. Building connections with other physicians in recovery provides invaluable peer support and long-term accountability.

Personalized Treatment Approach Our clinical team utilizes an array of evidence-based practices to help you recover. We design treatment that fits your unique needs rather than what insurance companies dictate. We also are trained to recognize and address co-occurring issues like depression, anxiety, burnout, and trauma (including PTSD). Our success rate with active military and veteran clients has helped us create a great infrastructure for treating trauma with modalities like EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

Given the above factors, it is no surprise that our outpatient drug rehabilitation program, located in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego, has become a highly recommended landing spot for physicians, for whom it is very effective.

Discreet, Structured, Clinically-Effective Outpatient Recovery

We provide long-term, sustainable treatment for substance abuse disorders. Confidential Recovery is an excellent option for continued treatment and support once individuals have been stabilized in a detox or a residential treatment program.

From alcohol to opioids to prescription medications, our physician clients receive treatment tailored to their needs. We believe that "one size doesn't fit all" when it comes to treatment approaches. Each individual will participate in the development of their own self-care plan, which is necessary for long-term sobriety and sustainable recovery.

Sustainable Recovery in Our IOP and Outpatient Treatment Programs

During our outpatient process, our clients maintain complete abstinence. Our outpatient program features the frequent celebration of our clients achieving sobriety milestones. As progress continues, we can gradually "step-down" the level of care to minimize the time commitment in order to shift the client's time and focus back onto pursuing their medical practice, family time and relationships.

How Long is an Outpatient Drug Program?

The longer that someone in recovery can take part in an outpatient program, the better the likelihood of achieving successful, long-term recovery. Physician clients typically attend counseling three to five times a week, totaling nine or more hours of weekly treatment.

Therefore, during each week of outpatient participation, a client will have ample support and education to assist them in thriving in their everyday lives, while filling their toolkits with resources and coping mechanisms that will help them live a happy, joyous, and free life.

The longer this participation continues, the better the outcome will be.

Is an Outpatient Program Right for Me?

An outpatient program allows for support to be given while giving you the opportunity to be responsible for your recovery and continue your medical practice. IOP Programs are well-suited for physicians who are able to be self-sufficient, but want to continue enjoying the support of a recovery system.

Clients in outpatient need to be aware of their emotional state even while away from the treatment center. Those who are in early recovery from a strong mental and physical addiction might require a higher level of care initially.

Outpatient drug programs are best for those who are confident that they can maintain a stable lifestyle during treatment without around-the-clock accountability. Intensive Outpatient Treatment also emphasizes self-management techniques. Ideally, those participating in a program such as this will be motivated enough to seek out twelve-step programs and Caduceus Meetings to support their recovery efforts.

Get Back on Track With Our Outpatient Program

Confidential Recovery is a great option for physicians who are "higher functioning" and want a recovery support system while they continue to live at home and maintain their medical careers and family/parenting responsibilities. Confidential Recovery is also a good 'step-down' in the level of care for those who have completed medical detoxification and residential drug treatment and have recently returned home (or are in a sober living home). Many of our physician clients combine our outpatient program with private therapy or medication-assisted treatment when clinically appropriate.
